ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

We believe that everything worthwhile is done together.

We have created a two-day learning space, where together we can explore how to better our practice in responding to non-fatal strangulation in the context of domestic violence.

Non-fatal strangulation (NFS) is used by perpetrators of domestic abuse to control and intimidate their victims-survivors. It is an insidious and lethal form of physical violence which is about power, control and lethality.

During these two days together, we want to listen and learn about the history and advocacy that brought this issue to light and explore current research. This symposium will open space to talk about these issues to enhance our practice responses and interventions with victims-survivors and perpetrators.

Our hopes for the two days:

o Exploring the challenges of coordinated and systemic interventions around NFS

o Understand the NFS legislation

o Identify the risks and prevalence of NFS

o Explore the links between NFS and domestic abuse and sexual violence

o Recognise and respond to NFS

o Confidently risk assess and offer co-ordinated interventions with survivors and perpetrators of NFS

o Understand the impact of NFS on victims-survivors – adults and young people
